Great Shelford is one of the more affluent villages south of Cambridge, with a housing mix that ranges from Victorian railway-era cottages to substantial detached homes — and roofs that need expert care to match.
The village grew significantly around the Shelford railway station in the late 1800s, and many of those original properties along Woollards Lane and Church Street still have their clay plain tile roofs. These are attractive but require regular mortar re-bedding to ridge and hip sections and vigilance around lead valleys and chimney flashings. More recent executive-style detacheds on the edges of the village often feature concrete interlocking tiles or even natural slate imported during the 1990s building boom.
