St Ives sits on the Great Ouse flood plain, and the town's older riverside properties and slate-roofed Victorian semis see more than their share of water ingress caused by cracked or lifting lead flashings.
The conservation area around the historic bridge and quayside is dense with older buildings — Georgian merchants' houses, Victorian cottages, and early 20th-century terraces — where chimney flashings and dormer cheeks were originally finished in lead that is now 50 to 80 years old.
